In 1997 ecologists from Geosciences and Biology started to investigate tropical mountain forest ecosystems in Southern Ecuador. Increasing concern
about the preservation and protection of tropical ecosystems, especially in the poorly understood mountain regions, and the danger of losing still more of their high biodiversity urgently call for scientific efforts
from many different fields. Expertise of the colleagues involved in the project as well as research cooperation with Ecuadorian universities and administrative support from the Ecuadorian governmental and
nongovernmental authorities (INEFAN), the necessary project infrastructure offered by the Fundación Científica San Francisco (FCSF), and the continuing sponsoring by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) have
been and still are an indispensable basis for the ongoing research into an integrated ecosystem analysis.
Summary: Analysis of undisturbed and disturbed tropical mountain forest ecosystems in Southern Ecuador
An ecosystem study of a tropical montane (rain)for-est is performed since 1997 on the southeastern Cordillera of the Ecuadorian Andes by a German group
of researchers in cooperation with local scientists. The study comprises biological as well as projects in geoscience and is sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and by the Fundación Científica San
Francisco. The investigated area of about 1000 ha is centered around the Estación Científica San Francisco in the Province of Zamora and consists of natural forests and patches of agricultural, mainly pasture land.
Part of it has already been abandoned. Concomitantly with the structural and functional analysis of the ecosystem, basic research aims at possibilities of sustainable uses of the various areas which are economically
as well as sociologically compatible with the local situation. In this issue, 6 contributions report first results of selected projects, covered by a prefatory overview that also addresses general problems of
ecosystem research.
Zusammenfassung: Analyse ungestörter und gestörter tropischer Bergregenwald-Ökosysteme in Südecuador
Ökologisch interessierte Geowissenschaftler und Biologen arbeiten zusammen mit ecuadorianischen Kollegen seit vier Jahren in tropischen
Gebirgsregenwäldern in Südecuador. Das mehrere Arbeitsgruppen umfassende, von der DFG geförderte Forscherteam konzentriert sich bei seinem Versuch einer integrierten Ökosystemanalyse sowohl auf grundlegende Fragen
funktionaler Zusammenhänge als auch auf praxisnahe Aspekte einer ökologisch wie auch sozioökonomisch angepaßten, nachhaltigen Landnutzung. Die Geländearbeiten aller Gruppen werden im selben, wenige 1000 ha großen,
stark reliefierten Gelände der Fundación Científica San Francisco sowohl in naturnahen Wäldern als auch auf Flächen unterschiedlicher Nutzung durchgeführt. In diesem Heft werden nach dem einleitenden Beitrag, der
generelle Fragen der Ökosystemforschung behandelt und in dem das Arbeitsgebiet vorgestellt wird, in sechs weiteren Beiträgen erste Ergebnisse von vegetationsökologisch und bodenkundlich arbeitenden Gruppen
vorgestellt.
Resumen: Análisis del sistema ecológico de los bosques montañosos disturbados y non disturbados en el sur de Ecuador
Scientíficos de las ciencias geograficos y biólogos trabajan hace 4 años juntos a colegas ecuatorianos en los bosques lluviosos tropicales montañosos
al sur del Ecuador . El grupo de científicos subvencionado por la DFG y compuesto por diferentes subgrupos se concentra en su intención de análisis integrado del sistema ecológico, asi como preguntas fundamentales
con relaciones funcionales, también en aspectos sobre el uso del suelo ecológica- y socioeconómicamente adaptado. El trabajo de campo de todos los grupos se realiza en el territorio de buen relieve de la Fundación
Científica San Francisco de unos 1000 ha asi como en bosques prácticamente naturales como también en áreas de uso diferente. En esta revista, después de la exposición de preguntas generales de la investigación del
ecosistema y la presentación de la materia de trabajo en la parte introductoria, en otros 6 artículos se presentan los primeros resultados de los grupos trabajando en la campo vegetativo-ecológico y la investigación
del suelo.
